A little known history is that Earl Grey Tea was brought into being during a poker game in Dundee. Earl MacMurdo Grey gambled one night a consignment (quarter tonne)of fresh tea leaves from India against two exquisite hand-made pistols - the party whom the Earl was playing against lost the game and thus - in anger - they tipped ripe oranges into the Earl´s consignment of tea.
The resulting taste created that unmistalable “tang” of Earl Grey Tea.
Yes…I too heard that Earl Grey did indeed indulge in gambling, although my ´version´ of the story involves Eskimo´s from Auchenshoogle (outside Inverness) who played the Earl a game of (hot) poker for two tea bags and a bag of fresh ice.
The Eskimo´s won the game - the Earl in a fit of rage - poured hot water on the ice, thus hading the Eskimo´s a plastic bag in which to keep their Goldfish…
This new “brand” was nicknamed: “Hot Goldfish Plastic Ice-Cube Earl Grey Tea”
