According to a new study on caffeine, caffeine addiction can cause people to have a decrease in alertness that is only brought back to "normal" when they consume caffeine, meaning that caffeine is "actually merely the reversal of the fatiguing effects of acute caffeine withdrawal."

The study compared people who consume no caffeine or low amounts of caffeine to people who consume medium-to-high amounts of caffeine. Interestingly, they found that people with genetic predispositions to anxiety do not avoid coffee, but actually drink more of it than the average person.
