Definition: Used tealeaves that have been dried after they are steeped. Chagra is commonly used for a variety of purposes in Japan and elsewhere, including:
  • An ingredient in aromatic sachets for the bath or for dressers, drawers, closets, etc.
  • A treatment for puffy eyes (in the form of a cool, wet, used teabag)
  • Stuffing for pillows
  • Fertilizer or compost in the garden
  • Pet food (Rumor has it that rabbits love chagra mixed with dry oats.)
Tea is a natural antiseptic and, when dry, it absorbs odor and moisture readily. These traits enhance its efficacy in many of the uses listed above.

The word 'chagra' comes from Japan, where the word 'cha' means 'tea'. Learn about more words for tea around the world.
