Assam is located in the mountains of the far eastern reaches of India. Most Assam tea is black tea, and it is generally known for its full-bodied, brisk flavor. "First flush" Assams from the first plucking of the growing season) tend to be more delicate and floral than other Assams. "Second flush" Assams (from the second plucking of the growing season) are particularly known for known their bold, malty flavor.
The majority of Assam teas are CTC teas that are used for blending into teabags. However, an increasing number of tea estates in Assam are moving toward production of orthodox teas, specialty teas, Fair Trade teas, organic teas, single-estate (unblended) teas and the like.
