Definition: Digestif is a French term for any drink consumed to aid digestion after a (usually heavy, greasy or large) meal. In Europe, the term is usually applied to herbaceous spirits or high-alcohol wines, but in Asia teas like puer and Houjicha are often consumed as digestifs. In some cultures, espresso drinks or spiked coffees are also consumed as one would drink a digestif.
The opposite of a digestif is an aperitif, which is consumed before a meal to whet the appetite.
