Kombucha Wonder Drink offers a range of kombucha-based blends. At the end of 2009, the introduced three new flavors, including Cherry Cassis. They expect this berry-based kombucha blend to be their most popular flavor yet. Read on to find out why I think they're right.
Packaging & Ingredients
Finally, there's a gorgeous-looking kombucha on the market with the packaging to show it off. The graphics look good, sure, but the brilliant ruby color of Cherry Cassis begs to be sipped from a wine glass even as the bottle sits in a grocery store cooler.
Within the bottle, there's a blend of pasteurized,* oolong-based kombucha, green tea, black currant juice, cherry juice and cane sugar. Each of the two seven-ounce servings contains 10 grams of sugar. The cap can be screwed back on, making it easy to drink one serving now and another one later. (I used this perk to create a non-alcoholic cocktail I call the Cherry Cinnamon Kombucha Mocktail.)
* Pasteurization nearly eliminates chances of contamination and lowers/stabilizes the alcohol content. In my experience, the pasteurization and/or blending also reduces the mind/body effects of kombucha. If it weren't for this factor, I would easily give Cherry Cassis five stars.

Aroma, Flavor & Aftertaste
The aroma of Cherry Cassis is delightfully tart. The classic kombucha "vinegar" aroma plays off as lemony and the berry notes of the cherries and black currants shine.
There's a surprising depth of flavor in Cherry Cassis. The vinegar note comes across (once again) as a lemony foil to a stewed cherry warmth. It's just sweet enough to entice some soda drinkers without offending kombucha fans.
The crisp, brief aftertaste is pleasantly puckery.
