The Mighty Leaf Tea Top Brew Mug merges form and function for a usable, appealing design.

Lindsey Goodwin
It’s rare that a truly great tea travel mug comes along. For bagged tea drinkers, this one comes close. In fact, its stylish look and easy use may even charm a few loose-leaf tea drinkers into giving it a chance!

Form

A brushed stainless steel body, neutral logo, elegant lip and clever yin-yang lid give this product the kind of look that no one can complain about. Unlike the many crayon-colored infusers out there, it’s thoroughly inoffensive no matter where your aesthetic preferences lie.

Function

Overall, the design is functional is the usual ways, plus some. The components of this infuser’s functionality are worth noting:

  • The lid has a built-in nook that allows you to lift the teabag and stop brewing to prevent over steeping.
  • The lid also has a slot for the teabag label, which keeps it from falling into the brew (and prevents you from scalding fingers trying to get it out of the hot water).
  • The body is double-walled stainless steel, meaning it keeps tea hotter for longer, increases ease of handling and withstands falls better than plastic travel infusers.
  • The base of the travel mug is rubberized, decreasing the chances of slipping and spilling on slick or moving surfaces.
  • The mug fits into most cars' cup holders and is very easy to carry, even without a handle.
  • It could be used with “tea socks” instead of teabags, and it works well with tea pouches and pyramid-style bags.

Shortcomings

As I said, there is rarely a truly great tea travel mug. This one has a few shortcomings:

  • Unless you have a tiny nose, the lid’s visually pleasing shape gets in the way of sipping once you’re more than halfway done with your tea.
  • The slot opening for the teabag label funnels steam in a way that most lids don’t, making chances of scalding higher (at least for me).
  • It’s not dishwasher safe.

Summary

This is a handy, attractive, durable infuser that is well suited for anyone who wants to brew teabags on the go. At $12.95, its price is comparable to the competition, but its functionality is superior to most travel mugs on the market. I particularly recommend it to tea drinkers who want to sip during commutes or travel, though it could also be used in the office or (for quick, informal tea) in the home.
