What I Drank Instead
While I was pregnant I limited my caffeine intake to almost nothing. In general, I don't enjoy herbals or rooibos, but found I really liked green rooibos. It seems to have more of a real tea "texture" and great flavor.
How I Found Replacement Drinks
I typically drink a decaffeinated version of a favorite black tea, realizing there is still a little bit of caffeine in the tea. This way I still have the taste and texture I like, with much less caffeine. I add a bit of almond milk and it is quite a low-caffeine treat.
Tips and Tricks
- I taste a lot of teas! By trying a lot of options I've been able to find a few teas with less caffeine that really work for me.
- I also drink a lot of good-old-plain-water.

Thanks for sharing! Rooibos is a safe, flavorful tisane (or "herbal tea") for consumption during pregnancy, and decaf black tea with almond milk sounds like a great option for those who are comfortable with some caffeine in their diets. Many pregnant women (and especially pregnant women with a history of miscarriage or problems conceiving) decide to remove most or all caffeine from their diets. There is some controversy over caffeine's safety during pregnancy. Interested readers can learn more about caffeine and pregnancy on About.com's Pregnancy site.
