Your Frozen Tea Treat Recipe
2 tsp black tea (ideally loose leaf)
2 green cardamom pods
1/2" stick cinnamon
1 cup whole milk
1 cup water
1 tsp sugar (more if you like it sweeter)
Heat the cup of water with sugar, cinnamon and cardamom (break the pods). As the water comes to a boil, add the tea. After 30 seconds, add the milk. Bring it to a boil and take the pot off the heat. Strain the tea (chai) into a freezable container. Cool to room temperature and then put it in freezer. Freeze overnight.
The next day, remove the container and allow to defrost at room temperature. When the milk is defrosted, pour into a glass and enjoy cold Iced Chai Milk.
Your Inspiration
Came across this by accident. I had made 50+ cups of hot chai to sell at a event. It turned to be one of the hottest day in SF. So, instead of throwing it out, I froze it and took it out the next day. Everyone loved it!! This is a variation of the chai recipe.
Reasons why this is the best way to make iced chai -
Black tea brews best in hot water
Milk defrosts faster than water - so you can get ice cold chai-flavoured milk without it being watered down with ice (& water).
Advice
- You can add pinch of nutmeg and some chocolate when brewing the tea.
- Whole milk works the best. If you are concerned about calories and fat, have a small glass.
- I normally freeze in the milk bottle. When milk is defrosted, its easier to pour out without the ice block falling out.
